Train Your Dog to Come on Command
One of the most frustrating things for dog owners can be when your pet ignores your call to come. Do you find yourself yelling at your doggy to come, and getting angry when he doesn’t? Do you yell some more at him once you’ve got him back on his leash or in the house? Well, it turns out that is something you shouldn’t do if you want to train your dog to come on command. Here is the reason why: All this will do is negatively reinforce the dog to not come. He’ll be thinking the word “come” means “you are in big trouble.” Would you want to go up to someone that you knew was going to yell and maybe spank you? Probably not. I have a friend who yells so loud at his dog to come, even if it is just a short distance away, that the dog is intimidated, and surely thinks it must have done something wrong. This creates a lot of confusion, and his dog is usually afraid to come over to him. Then his yelling escalates. It is not a pretty picture, but he is set in his ways.
Before I learned the right way to deal with this problem of getting my dogs to come on command, I’d be yelling and calling over and over and getting angry at my non-responsive dog. My dogs weren’t scared of me, just ignoring me. That was perhaps even more cause for frustration. Eventually I learned that I had to retrain myself before I learned how to get my dog to come every time. Naturally, your dog won’t want to come if he hears anger in your voice and associates it with the word come. In fact, he might even run further away because he thinks come is the word you use prior to punishing him.

To get your dog to come on command, you must make the dog feel that when he does come to your call, he will be earning your praise and maybe even a treat for a reward. You have to be consistent. Never use the come command in an angry tone of voice. Since your dog only understands your body language and tone of voice, he will learn what that command means by how you use it. If you make it fun for him to come, he’ll be happy to listen. Make it fun to come on command when you call by always giving lavish praise, pets and maybe a treat, too. It also helps when training this come command to crouch down lower so that you greet your dog closer to his own level. Dogs find this posture less intimidating. If you practice this positive reinforcement, and are very consistent, he will learn to only associate the come command with good things, and not be scared to come. He is also much less likely to just ignore you, because he relates the “come” command with praise and rewards. If he has associated the word come with anger (because you’ve gotten mad at him previously for not coming) he won’t be very eager to comply. Even if you have caught your dog in the act of misbehaving-perhaps he’s digging up the tomato plants you put in the garden-don’t overreact with anger. Call your dog and if he doesn’t respond, don’t repeat” come” or your dog’s name name over and over as you get increasingly agitated-that will only let him know he can ignore you and get away with it. Not good. Instead, say something like Sit with a firm tone of voice to get your dog’s attention. Then go over and get him, put him on his leash and then work some more on the come command. You won’t praise him for not performing, but likewise do not give off angry vibrations. Be calm and patient, because it’ll take some repetition before your training gets consistent results.
