Positive Reinforcement Training

If you are anything like me you love to have at least one dog in the family. It is a real joy to have a dog, and even more so if they are well behaved so that you can also be confident of their behavior. Train your dog using positive reinforcement techniques for the very best results. Dogs  make for a loyal and loving companion for you and your family, however, we all know an untrained  or only partially trained dog can have some behavior problems that can really make him a pain in the butt sometimes. Training your dog is sort of like guiding your kids, in the sense that without some consistent guidelines they will push the limits to see who is in control. Fortunately, dogs are a lot simpler to figure out. The good news is you can train your own dog at home without the need to go to a professional. This is a good way to create a strong bond with your dog, and saves you a lot of money, too. You should learn to use positive reinforcement training techniques  when teaching your dog how he should behave. Training is easiest and works best if you can start when he is still a puppy, but there is no truth to the old saying “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” You can! I have been a dog lover all my life, and have been raising and self-training my dogs for over 35 years, and by learning to use positive reinforcement training I can get the results I want, without any need for yelling at or punishing my pets. See my article on Puppy Training Using Positive Reinforcement, if you have a new puppy in your household.

I’ve sure learned a lot by observing and studying my dogs and trying to learn from the various professionals out there. I admit to having mixed results for a long time. Believe me, when I was young and didn’t know better I wasn’t training properly, and my results were never as good as I would have liked. Trust me, if you want to  learn the right way to train your dog,  use positive reinforcement for training. You and your dog be very happy with the results. For really learning how to do it right and get fast effective results, do yourself a favor and get a copy a great dog training book, or perhaps, a dog training video.

To get the most out of your relationship with your pet, training your puppy or dog yourself, is something you’ll want to do. The obedience training, when done correctly, will help you form a strong bond between you and your pet. This site is here to give you some tips and advice about how to train your pet dog using only “positive reinforcement” techniques.  In addition to the actual commands and hand signals you will use while training,  it is also  important  to understand the concepts behind why positive reinforcement training works so well. If you start to learn the way dogs communicate in the world, via their body language, facial expressions and vocalizations, it will help you become an excellent trainer for your dog. It really helps you to be consistent with your training, an important key to success, if you understand why you are training in this particular fashion. Everything seems logical if you look at the world through the dog’s eyes while you are training him. You will see that by using positive reinforcement techniques such as lots of praise and affection and some nice tasty snack treats as rewards for a job well done will get you the best results, whereas harsh and negative styles of training just won’t win you the love, confidence trust and respect that your dog will have for you when he is trained using only positive reinforcement techniques.

In order to learn how to understand the dog’s body language and everything else you will need to know about training your dog with positive reinforcement I recommend  reading  Daniel Steven’s book called Secrets to Dog Training. It is very comprehensive-teaching everything you will need to train your dog from the puppy stages right through very advanced training. He teaches both the mental perspective and the actual training you will be using, through an easy to follow step-by-step training program. Training your dog with positive reinforcement should be a fun thing for both you and your dog. You will be creating confidence and trust with your dog, while never causing it insecurity through harsh negative training. My Lab loves her daily training sessions. When I tell her “down”, she literally dives to the floor. She is happy and eager to show me her stuff. You can tell she is actually proud of herself. I think she even likes to show off to the other dogs. If you have ever seen a dog cringing while it does as it is commanded, you know how sad a site that is.  Training your dog with positive reinforcement will get him to perform well because he wants to earn your love and praise, and maybe a tasty treat, and not because it feels it is being bullied. So, I hope these tips are helpful, and I wish you the best of times with your puppy or dog!
