Here are a few of the more common types of dog training devices that people use to help train or control their dogs.

Leashes: Normally you walk your dog using a 6-foot leash, but there are also longer length leashes that are used for certain types of training exercises. There are also very short leashes for other types of handling.

Collars: In addition to the  flat leather or nylon collar your dog probably wears on a regular basis,  you are likely familiar with two other two common types of training collars- the choke collar and the pinch collar. These two collars are used to correct your dog with a tug as you work the dog on his leash during obedience training.

Harnesses: Dog harnesses are placed around the dog’s torso and the leash is attached to a ring near the shoulders, instead of using a collar. These are good for handling a tracking dog.

Electric collars: These kinds of special collars work by emitting a very small shock to the dog via  a remote control. You control the application of the shock. Make sure you thoroughly understand the correct usage of an electric shock collar to be absolutely sure you are not abusing your pet. The shock is said to be no more shocking than the shock given by touching a TV after rubbing your feet on the carpet-it will get you to pay attention, but is not harmful. This is certainly better than getting so frustrated that you hit your dog. Another benefit of the remote control is that your dog doesn’t realize it is you applying the correction.  Sometimes, dogs that have resisted normal dog training methods  respond quickly to the electric collars.

Electric Bark Correcting Collars: These collars are a type of electric dog collar that have been designed specifically to control dog barking problems.  One type works with a shock. You can set a time delay with a controller so that your dog is allowed to bark long enough to warn you of intruders, not not so long that his barking can become a nuisance.

There is another type that works by emitting a mist of Citronella oil. Dogs hate this smell, and as soon as they learn to associate it with their barking, the barking gets under control.

There is  even collar that emits a noise that your dog just can’t stand when the dog barks too much. He will learn to stop the noise by stopping his barking.

There is yet another type of collar that combines both the noise and smell  deterrents.

Underground  electric fences: These are the invisible fences that are used for keeping your dog in your yard or confined to a specific area of the yard, when you have no fence. They are preferable to chaining your up, as your dog has much more room to have fun. These work by attaching a burying electric cable around the chosen perimeter to a controller. The controller sends a signal to a special collar that comes with the fence kit. The collar produces a warning signal as the dog approaches it before giving an electric shock if the dog tries to cross the line. These work because your dog will learn where the boundary is through the warning signal and not pass the perimeter.

Pet Training Mats: These are devices that will stop dogs from going through doorways, or from jumping up on furniture or tables and kitchen counters. These mats emit a shock when touched by your dog’s paws and teach him to stay away.

Dog Kennels or Crates: These are the portable Crates that you can use for airplanes when you take your dog on a trip. They are also commonly used for house training puppies and dogs. These devices are wonderful house training aids, in case you haven’t already tried one, be sure to look into Crate Training for your next puppy before you try to house train him any other way.

Your pet store will have these and more dog training devices for if you are having particular problems with your dog that you just can’t seem to control, you might benefit from one of these dog training devices.  Don’t get angry or overly frustrated when trying to obedience train your dog-use the right tool instead.
