Dog Training Clubs
Dog training clubs are the way many dog owners get started with obedience training their dogs. People and their dogs enjoy the training and the socializing provided by a dog training club. You get a chance to help your dog become a well behaved and well balanced pet, as well as meet a group of nice people who share your love of dogs. Dogs are much less likely to become aggressive towards people or other dogs if they are well socialized, so this is an important benefit of joining dog training clubs. Each club will have a regular schedule of dog training classes for you to choose from. Depending on the level of training your pet is ready for you pick the class that is best suited for your schedule.

The dog training clubs will have the various dog training classes divided into different categories, such as classes for group puppy training, basic beginning obedience training, intermediate obedience training and then the more advanced training. The more advanced training classes may include classes to prepare a dog for dog show competitions, agility training, search and rescue and more. By joining a good dog training club, you can learn a lot about how to train your pet to be the companion you always wanted. Through socializing with the other class members, you will have an opportunity to exchange your stories about your dogs with each other, and get valuable tips on solving various kinds of dog behavior problems.
Each club will have experienced dog trainers leading the classes. You should check out the club you are interested in joining before you sign up. Try to talk to someone who is a member already and get their feedback about the club. You want a club that features only positive dog training techniques-which is usually the norm these days. If you have a popular breed of dog, such as a German shepherd or a Labrador Retriever, you can often find a club specific to your breed of dog, if that is of interest to you.
Many dog training clubs have an affiliation with the national Dog Owner’s Association. This organization has occasional get togethers with dogs owners and their dogs -sort of a pet retreat. At these events you can enroll in a week long dog training course, and learn how you can become a dog obedience trainer and help other people get started training their own dogs when they join your club.
After each training lesson at the dog training club, you should then practice the exercises you and your dog just learned at your home several times daily so reinforce the new exercises. that way your pet will be ready to learn something new-the next step-at his next dog training class. Besides having fun learning obedience training, the socializing that your pet gets from being trained in a group setting, along with the interaction with other people and their pets, is really beneficial. This interaction will help your dog grow up to be a friendly and well mannered pet. Dogs that turn out to be overly aggressive are often the same dogs that have grown up isolated and never bonded with other dogs or people. Your dog needs to learn that there is no need to be angry or fearful of other dogs and people for no real reason. The socializing at the dog training clubs will teach your dog how much fun it can be to have canine as well as human friends.
Many of the members of dog training clubs join just to enjoy having a well behaved pet, and for the social aspects the club provides. However, some members are more serious and want to go to the next level and enter their pets into show dog competitions. If you are interested in the dog show competitions, check with the American Kennel Club for their dog show events schedules. The AKC dog shows are for pure bred dogs only, with each breed of dog competing with other dogs of breeds with similar characteristics.
There are other types of specialized dog training clubs-such as for hunting dogs, tracking dogs, agility training, even for dog sports, such as the fun Dock Dog competitions, where dogs such as Labradors leap off of docks in an attempt to reach a lure suspended many feet away above the water. It is amazing how far they can leap. Depending on your dog’s specialty-maybe he’s a Frisbee expert-you can probably find a dog club that fits you and your dog.
For dog owners who really want to push the limits of advanced dog training, look into Schutzhund dog training. There are Schutzhund training clubs for dog owner’s of very specially trained dogs, usually( but not limited to) German shepherd dogs. Schutzhund dogs are trained to perform three main sections or trials at their competitions: tracking, obedience, and protection. Each dog is judged on a point system for its skill and enthusiasm and obedience while performing these difficult tasks. The Schutzhund training also has 3 different levels- Schutzhund I, II, or III, depending on the degree of difficulty of the trial. This is the highest level of dog training, and is not part of a regular dog training club’s itinerary. These dogs are suitably qualified to be police dogs or search and rescue dogs.
Check out a dog training club near you and get signed up. If you have a new puppy, there is no better time to get started. Your pet and you will really have fun and learn a lot at the classes, and the results of having a well behaved and thoroughly socialized dog make the classes well worth it.
